About Horn & Heat

Heat With Purpose

Horn & Heat didn’t begin in a test kitchen or a boardroom.

It began in South Africa’s Northern Cape Province during the filming of the documentary Rhino Rescue: Battling Extinction in South Africa. While on location, founders Fernando and Bri Coelho met wildlife veterinarian Dr. Liam Theuns Smit, known throughout conservation circles as The Rhino Doctor.

Liam Smit rhino vet

Liam is responsible for the health and care of more than 450 rhinos at Rockwood Conservation. His work involves treating injured animals, responding to poaching incidents, and overseeing the care of orphaned calves that require constant attention to survive. While dedicated patrol teams protect the land, Liam’s role is focused on the animals themselves. Their survival depends on it.

Away from the field, on his own farm, Liam began making hot sauce by hand using peppers he grew himself. What started as a personal project had nothing to do with branding or scale.

No shortcuts. No gimmicks. Just real heat and real flavor.

During filming, Liam shared a bottle of his sauce. Then another. The flavor was bold, layered, and deliberate. When Fernando and Bri returned to Rockwood Conservation in 2025 and tasted it again, the conclusion was clear. This wasn’t a novelty. It was the foundation of something worth building.

Fernando Coelho

Fernando, an experienced filmmaker with work streaming on Apple TV+, Amazon Prime, and Tubi, and Bri, a chef and sommelier with a deep focus on ingredient-driven cooking, partnered with Liam to bring his original hot sauce to market in the United States. The goal was not to commercialize a gimmick, but to preserve the integrity of the original sauce while building a brand that could scale responsibly.

The result is a line built around real heat, layered flavor, and purpose. At the center of the line are three hot sauces. Rhino Doctor Reserve is the original expression: a serious, eight-pepper hot sauce inspired by Liam’s own recipe and built for people who want bold heat with depth. Rhino Gold and Rhino Baby were developed by Bri to carry the same philosophy into sauces designed for everyday use, with balanced heat, layered flavor, and broader accessibility across different palates.

That same approach extends beyond the bottle. Rhino Nectar brings Horn & Heat into hot honey, pairing natural sweetness with slow-building chili heat. Rhino Doctor Spicy Dill Chips carry the heat profile of the original eight-pepper mash from Rhino Doctor Reserve hot sauce into a crunchy, sharp, and deliberately spicy pickle.

Rhino standing in road

Together, the products form a heat-driven pantry line with one clear standard: Real flavor. Real heat. Real impact.

The hot sauces remain the heart of Horn & Heat. They are the origin point, the flagship products, and the clearest expression of the story that started at Rockwood. Rhino Nectar and Rhino Doctor Spicy Dill Chips expand that same flavor philosophy into new formats, giving customers more ways to experience the brand without losing sight of where it began.

Every bottle sold supports the Rockwood Conservation Fund, the nonprofit founded by Liam and Rockwood Conservation founder Wicus Diedericks.

The fund helps provide care for baby rhinos. Just one calf can require more than $10,000 in milk alone.

Protection takes resources.

Commitment takes action.

Horn & Heat exists to prove that what you put on your food can stand for something beyond taste.
